SIC Codes
Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes are two, four or six-digit numerical codes assigned to companies to identify their primary business. The classification was developed in the 1930’s to assist in the collection, arrangement and analysis of statistical business data. SIC codes are also used to promote consistency in the presentation of data collected by the federal government, state agencies and private organizations. SIC codes cover the entire economic market: agriculture, forestry, fishing, hunting and trapping; mining; construction; manufacturing; transportation; communications, electric, gas and sanitary services; wholesale trade; retail trade; finance; insurance and real estate; personal, business, professional, repair, recreation and other services; and public administration. Over the years, SIC classification has been revised to reflect the economy's changing composition and organization.

How to read an SIC Code
The first two digits of the code identify the major industry group, the third digit identifies the industry group and the fourth digit identifies the industry.
